You see it all the time. A cultivated field and in the middle, a copse of trees taking up valuable, tillable farmland. There’s probably a very rational agricultural reason for leaving a stand of trees out in the middle of an otherwise cultivated field. If so, I hope I never learn what it is.

Stands of trees like this feel almost pagan. It’s as if the farmers are leaving a bit of the land alone for some arcane mystical purpose…something only the initiated can comprehend. And I like that.

    Windbreaks… the reasons farmers plant them are many. Trees…their rational uses are wonderous and they take up far less land than the benefits they deliver. But, as you wish, I shall not be the one to tell you their secrets.
